Non-Profit Organizations

A non-profit organization, or charity, is an organization set-up to perform work that benefits certain underprivileged classes of people. It is ordained by the government and granted various tax benefits that make it beneficial to the organizer to start the company; government regulations also make it attractive for all who donate assets to contribute money in support of the organization. Historically, charities were developed to meet certain needs of society; they were formed to do public good and to provide aid to segments of the community that fell outside of the general scope of public assistance. In the nonprofit sector, charitable purpose is broadly defined to include relief of poverty, advancement of education or religion, promotion of health, governmental or municipal purposes, and other purposes that are beneficial to the community at large.

As most would agree, people are not generally altruistic by nature. The most basic economic theories advise us that people will only act in their best self-interest in an attempt to maximize their financial standing. In an effort to inject philanthropic motives into American society – thereby decreasing self-interest - the US government has devised a plan that will incentivize high-net worth individuals to work for certain charitable purposes.

By developing an organization, you will have the opportunity to focus on a particular segment of society to which you have an affinity; you will be able to control the financial input and output of the organization; you will be able to control who does the work for the organization; and, among many other benefits, you will have direct oversight over the organization, which will permit you to make immediate changes should you detect problems with the organization.

As an Emáque consultant, I will utilize my skill and expertise to work with members who are interested in transitioning into a career in the non-profit arena. I will work with you and your representatives (financial advisor(s), tax consultant(s), etc.) to determine whether you have the appropriate level of interest, capital and expertise to start and maintain a non-profit organization of your own. If your interests are in working with a non-profit as opposed to starting one of your own, I will assist you in focusing your interests to identify a list of organizations that will welcome your membership and leadership assistance.
